The story of Matthias is a fascinating tale of being ready to answer the call and never knowing when the call will come. Matthias was around from the beginning, but never part of the initial “in” group. Yet, he witnessed all the great events of our salvation history. If it was not for Judas’ betrayal and suicide, his name would be lost to history. Instead, the Apostles in prayer choose Mathias to be one of them. Perhaps it is fitting that he is the patron saint of hope and perseverance.
Matthias is a role model to remind us that “things” happen and we may be unexpectedly called to take on tasks and responsibilities for which we never planned. However, God prepared Mathias for the next step in his life, even if Mathias did not know he was being prepped. Just as we have the faith that God will not abandon us in our new challenges, we must develop the faith that God has been preparing us for them all our lives. The power and strength we need is already there, we just need to be willing to step up and ask.
